| Never underestimate gray food. |
[15 May 2008|10:39pm] |
Because I'm craving bullet hell: ( List: Shumps for me! )
I'm utterly exhausted. Attempted to draw tonight, but just too tired to concentrate on paper. There are many, many things I need to draw. Wanted to play some games, but too tired to push my hands tonight (clutching a controller is so bad for me). Might just keel over and read a novel. There's a definite nasty edge of exhaustion in my head, the kind you get from overworking too much and too long. Everything I want to do sounds so very good to do, but I have no energy left to accomplish much.
Jaw is excruciating. Five more days of hell before the doctor. Tired of soft, mushy foods!
Um..in happier news? I've read 28 discworld novels in two months? (Ye gods, really?!) I'm going to need a new author soon.

Seems like the motherboard is fried. I'm going to frankenstein something together from Spare Parts (Chris's old desktop machine) until felis_concolor gets here with a real replacement.
The windows are leaking. And we had an ant invasion in the bedroom. We slept in the library last night because the bedroom was full of Raid fumes. I think I got five hours of sleep.
BUT
I'm about to finish a pair of socks. I carded three batts' worth of alpaca yesterday and I'm going to either card more tonight or spin what I've got. I plied almost a hundred yards of handspun three different ways. The trench I dug in the driveway is doing the trick. The rain seems to be stopping, finally. I have tea.
Life is good, overall. They may be leaking, but they're MY leaking windows. :)

Update: They spent some hours in the hospital over night, nothings broken just a lot of all over tissue damage. His neck is pretty tore up (can't support) and he won't be on his feet for awhile. Some teenager with a fresh license pulled an illegal u-turn directly into traffic.
So some doodles instead huh? ( Scroodles. [12] )

I came back to my desk and the screen was black. Fans running, lights on, keyboard and mouse not responsive. Couldn't SSH in. Turned it off, waited, turned it on again... still black.
WTF? How do I fix this?

| two movies |
[11 May 2008|02:59am] |
tonight bill and i went to the castro theater to watch contempt, a 1963 movie directed by jean-luc godard.
i'd always wanted to see a godard film. movies are definitely something which i feel as though my desire to know about exceeds my level of knowledge.
it's a good film. i'm not sure what's great about it, but a lot of that has to come from the fact that it's 45 years old, and when it was new it probably represented something a lot different from what it represents now, to me, who's seen many films made in the intervening time. i'm sure of a lot of that was technique. they probably didn't call it the "new wave" for nothing.
on one hand, i think there was a lot to it; it deals with a scriptwriter who's being hired to pen a film adaptation of the odyssey, so there's a lot of interplay between the odyssey and contempt's story and characters, and there's also a lot in it about the nature of film. at the same time, the characters aren't at all likable or even that interesting. i suspect that the way it played with breaking the fourth wall and commenting on itself was probably a little more interesting and exciting 45 years ago, y'know? still, it was worth watching.
the other movie i watched is batman returns. this was released two days before my fifteenth birthday, and in fact that was when we first went to see it. i have fond memories of that trip. i know dravenfrost was there, and probably taumeson. probably aaron as well, and jeff, i'm sure. a week later i went and saw it again with my dad, one of the few movies i've seen with him in my life.
i used to love it a lot. i was one of the few people (who i knew, anyway) who liked it significantly more than the original film. i felt a lot to relate to in the character of selina kyle/catwoman, and to a lesser extent the penguin as well. fifteen was not a great time in my life and i wanted my revenge on the world too. selina's inability to reconcile her identity and ability to actually grab hold of her strength and rage and do something with it spoke to me. i was confused, and hurt. i had a lot to learn, but that's another story.
it's still really enjoyable. it's got some great, sarcastic writing, christopher walken is hilarious, michelle pfeiffer is perfect -- very entertaining. it could use a smidge of help with the pacing, but tim burton knew how to make batman films. it leaves a perfect opening for a sequel in which catwoman and batman have their reckoning; i don't know what stopped that from happening, but whatever did happen, joel schumacher ended up making the totally fucking horrific batman forever instead. i just realized that's why i've hated nicole kidman since, like, ever. i'd forgotten. i've never really liked another movie she's been in, either. oh well.
i think batman returns is one of the only superhero movies i've ever genuinely liked. then again, it's really more about catwoman than it is about batman. in fact, she might even have more screen time...

I was going to go up to my moms for a surprise mothers day visit and spend some time with her (she's been really really sick) and I haven't seen her in a month and some. Was going to use the last two days off I get before working an insane amount of days in a row at the job. Was going to show up with a bunch of flowers and cookies. But she just called me to tell me not to start driving up (2 hour drive) and she doesn't want me on the road because her husbands just been in a huge car accident. Someone just hit him out of nowhere and the car was totaled.
I don't know any details yet so I'm waiting on a phone call since my mom went out to try and find him. I'm kinda freaking out a little.
Hngnnngnng.
Update: He was hit full on by some other car. His vehicle is 100% totaled, nothing salvageable. They are taking him to the hospital now.
